Today is a historic day for our democracy in Nigeria as we celebrate the victory of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice of Nigeria is Lateef Fagbemi, SAN in the Supreme Court. This victory not only strengthens democracy and the separation of powers as intended by the constitution of Nigeria but also sets a precedent for future cases and decisions that will uphold the rule of law and the will of the people.
The Supreme Court’s judgment today is a clear indication that the judiciary is independent and will not succumb to any form of pressure or influence. This is crucial in maintaining the balance of power between the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government. It also ensures that no one branch of government becomes too powerful and that each branch can act as a check and balance on the others.
Furthermore, today’s judgment highlights the importance of the rule of law in our democracy. It shows that no one is above the law, not even the president and commander in chief. The fact that the Supreme Court ruled in favor of upholding the constitution and the will of the people is a testament to the strength and resilience of our judicial system.
Moving forward, it is essential that we continue to strengthen our democracy and uphold the principles of separation of powers. One way to do this is by ensuring that local governments play a more significant role in delivering the true value of democracy to the grassroots. Local governments are often the closest to the people and can have a significant impact on their daily lives. By giving them more autonomy and resources, like Agriculture and housing, we can ensure that the needs and desires of the people are met at the local level.
Another crucial step in strengthening our democracy is to ensure that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) conducts all elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner. This means that the wishes of the masses are respected and that the outcome of elections truly reflects the will of the people. It is essential that we move away from the traditional ways of party in government winning local government elections and instead focus on ensuring that the wishes of the people are heard and respected.
Today’s victory in the Supreme Court is a significant milestone for our democracy in Nigeria. It shows that the rule of law prevails and that the separation of powers is vital in maintaining a healthy and functioning democracy. Moving forward, we must continue to strengthen our democracy by giving local governments more autonomy and ensuring that INEC conducts all elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner. Only then can we truly deliver the true value of democracy to the grassroots and ensure that the will of the people is enthroned. Let us continue to work towards a more democratic and just society for all Nigerians.
