Our correspondent covering the ogun state local government elections Titilayo Adegbenro reports, all is not well with the modus operandi of conducting elections for the local government that is scheduled for July 2021, in Ogun State
Cracks that are possibly going to destabilize Governor Dapo Abiodun and Ogun state is currently brewing.
Some of the issues that is causing a lot of crisis that can further disintegrate the party is a new introduction of Convener by the Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun (Mfr) led administration into the local government arena, which is total alien to the party constitution.
The administration, screening and selection of the Candidates for any election is purely a party affair based on the party constitution. However our investigations has revealed that the so called Conveners are trying to hijack the process which is causing a lot of agitation, it would be seen during the demonstration of the party members in Abeokuta south recently that the so called conveners has drawn up a comprehensive list of shortlisted chairmen in the twenty local government and Councellor’s in the 236 wards against the party laid down rules of process for this process.
This was also confirmed by the press release of the state chairman ALhaji Yemi Sanusi that all processes been circulated by the so called conveners was not with the approval of the party as the party is yet to announce the actual process.
The party also indicated the issue of conveners was dead on arrival as it’s not constitutional and totally against party constitution.
However a stake holders meeting was held in Abeokuta where it was expressly agreed that party leaders should go back to each of there local government to try pruning down the number of aspirants to between 3 and 5 based on consensus as some Local government have over 30 aspirants, if they are able to achieve that the governor have promised a refund to all aspirants nomination fees paid that agree to the consensus, however if this was not achieved they all must go to direct primaries.
The political environment of Ogun state is getting heated up and if care is not taking it might snow ball to heavy violence and possible implosion of the party.
Some of the anonymous people we interviewed have however appealed to the Governor and the party chairman to take charge to forestall the kind of scenario that happened in 2019.
It was also discovered that the conveners have asked for a levy of between N25,000 – N50,000 which they claim is order from the government. We are aware that all aspirants have already paid N200,000.00 and N50,000 respectively to the party for intent forms a situation that is new in APC. The questions in the lips of party members is what is this fund for?
We are constantly monitoring the situation the over 17 Local governments that our correspondent visited was almost the same thing as the government appointees that called them selves conveners whom majority are new comers into the party are scheming seriously to subvert the party and the constitutional process.
