LET’S BE HONEST WITH OURSELVES – Abayomi Odunowo

Let’s be honest with ourselves.

Even with a monthly salary of N1 million, the temptation to compromise is still rampant within the civil service. It is a harsh reality that despite efforts to increase salaries and create a fair working environment, the issue of endemic corruption still persists. Each civil servant is aware of their salary at the time of employment, and it is not a matter of the government being unfair in this regard.

The root of the problem lies in the acceptance and celebration of those who compromise and engage in corrupt practices. This toxic culture rewards and promotes individuals who are willing to compromise their integrity for personal gain. As a result, those who uphold ethical standards often find themselves at a disadvantage within the system.

In order to combat corruption within the civil service, it is essential to address the underlying issues and implement meaningful changes. Lifting the veil and thoroughly weeding out corrupt individuals from the system is crucial. Additionally, efforts should be made to recognize and elevate individuals who uphold the principles of honesty and integrity.

Ultimately, the fight against endemic corruption requires a multi-faceted approach that involves not only addressing salary disparities, but also challenging the toxic culture that rewards compromise and dishonesty. Only through these measures can we hope to create a fair and transparent civil service.

It is a sad reality that, in many countries, some civil servants are complicit in enabling corruption within the government. This not only undermines the public’s trust in their elected officials but also hinders the progress and development of the nation as a whole. While it is important to acknowledge that there are still civil servants with integrity who perform their duties with honesty and dedication, they often go unrecognized and unsung.

To truly combat corruption within the government, it is imperative to create systems with structures, processes, Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s), and checks and balances that are beyond human intervention. This will help to ensure that there are safeguards in place to prevent and detect corrupt practices. However, it is crucial that these systems are continually monitored and updated to adapt to the changing landscape of corruption, as corrupt individuals are often resourceful in finding new ways to exploit the system. Going forward in our country we must implement e-governance

The prevalence of corruption within the government is a global issue, and no country is immune to it. However, it is disheartening to see the extent to which it occurs in some nations. It is imperative that steps are taken to address this issue and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. Only then can we begin to build a legacy of honesty, transparency, and integrity within our government.
